Biography

Tupa Ruja started out as a duo in 2006, when singer / composer / lyricist Martina Lupi and multi-instrumentalist Fabio Gagliardi decided to meet the challenge of creating a new musical genre, rooted in the sounds of ancient cultures. They participated in numerous ethnic and experimental music festivals, garnering national and international recognition as well as several important awards. In 2013 they were joined by drummer / guitarist / arranger Alessandro Chessa. Since then, each individual member has contributed to the trio’s peculiar blend of influences: Marina’s Mediterranean-inspired melodies, lyrics and vocals intertwine quite seamlessly with the sound of the (Austalian Aboriginal) didgeridoo, as well as Fabio’s multiethinic percussions and Alessandro’s melodic and rhythmic guitar.

In their creative effort, TupaRuja uncover the similarities and meeting points among a diverse range of musical cultures in the search for new possibilities of fusion and expression, which stem from a common ground. That common origin is to be found, quite simply, in the Earth itself, as the soil cultures have been feeding on for ever and the gound we all still tread.

TupaRuja‘s appeal is not confined to music. In fact, their live performances are enriched by Marina’s Middle-Eastern dancing and fire-juggling, which translate the music into the language of the body in motion, illustrating the general principle underlying their project: that is, the belief that everything is fuelled by one powerful sound, the sound of life itself, which comes from the deep and is only reverberated in fragments and nuances on the surface of the planet.
